BEIRUT: In a bid to mitigate the effects of Lebanon's severe financial crisis, Lebanese President Michel Aoun has called the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to assist in promoting and exporting Lebanon's agricultural products.

Aoun made the comments on Monday at a meeting at Baabda Palace with Nora Ourabah Haddad, the recently appointed FAO Representative in Lebanon, to explore cooperation between Lebanon and FAO.

"Because it is a crucial component of the productive economy, Lebanon places a high value on the agricultural sector. Since the land is the most essential thing to a person and provides security in life, we were dependent on the rentier economy for many years. This needs to change now "In a press release issued by the presidency of Lebanon, the President was cited as saying.

Ourabah emphasised the necessity of developing an emergency strategy to assist the nation in achieving food security while concentrating on raising the nation's production, particularly wheat, which might produce a high return for the nation.

The management of Lebanon's natural resources to guarantee food security and the sustainability of the nation's food system was another topic that Aoun and Ourabah explored.
