Amidst the lockdown and the Corona crisis, Dubai's Sikh businessman and founder of the Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust, Dr SP Singh Oberoi, once again paid 14 lakhs of blood money to save 14 Indians, including two Pakistanis, from death. There are 11 Punjabi and one Haryanvi. Pakistani youth have returned to their homeland, while nine Punjabi has arrived in India. All are currently quarantined for 14 days at the Military Hospital Chennai.

Three are still stranded in Dubai because they did not get a seat in the ship coming to India. Dr SP Singh Oberoi said that on 31 December 2015, 23-year-old Asif Ali of Samrai town of Jalandhar and Varinderpal Singh, 25, of Pandori village of Kapurthala was killed during a quarrel in Sharjah. A total of 14 youth were found guilty in this case, out of which 12 were Indians and two Pakistanis. All these youth were jailed by the police on January 1, 2016.

According to Dr Oberoi, the families of these youth had pleaded with them. He then met Nirmal Singh, a close relative of the deceased Varinderpal in Dubai and told that he wants to save the convicted youth by giving blood money on behalf of the victims' families. He appeared in court on May 2018 with Nirmal Singh. After getting permission from the court, on July 9, 2018, he got the families of the victims prepared by handing over blood money and on 24 October he handed over the settlement papers to the court.
