Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, while providing crucial information to the Parliament, stated that the government has been effectively providing LPG gas cylinders to economically disadvantaged families at affordable rates compared to other countries. The neighboring countries Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have significantly higher prices for cooking gas compared to India. Recently, he also shared details about the consumption of cooking gas.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri revealed that under the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the average consumption of LPG cylinders per person has improved to 3.8 refills from April to October, compared to 3.01 refills during the fiscal year 2019-20 and 3.71 refills during the financial year 2022-23.

He highlighted that under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the Central Government provides a subsidy of INR 300 to economically disadvantaged families. Consequently, beneficiaries receive a 14.2-kilogram LPG cylinder for INR 603 in Delhi. If you are eligible for this scheme, you need to purchase it for INR 903 in New Delhi, and later, a subsidy of INR 300 will be credited directly to your account. Hardeep Singh Puri also mentioned that in Pakistan, an LPG cylinder costs 1059.46 INR, in Sri Lanka 1,032.35 INR, and in Nepal 1,198.56 INR.

Increasing LPG Consumers:
Hardeep Singh Puri stated that during the year 2014, there were 14 crore LPG consumers, and the number has now risen to 33 crores. Approximately 10 crore consumers are benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 to provide the benefits of LPG gas at subsidized rates to economically disadvantaged families.

Approval for PMUY Expansion:
Recently, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the expansion of the scheme to issue 75 lakh LPG connections from the financial year 2023-24 to 2025-26. With this expansion, the total beneficiaries under the PM Ujjwala Yojana will reach 10.35 crores.
