Chennai: Recently, the Madras High Court has dismissed the petition of mining company Vedanta. It had filed permission to reopen the unit of Sterlite Copper at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. This petition has been dismissed by the Madras High Court on Tuesday. Due to the concern about pollution, this unit was closed in May 2018, which is still closed. The company called the decision a 'temporary setback' and said, 'it will consider all legal options. Politicians and others welcomed this decision'.

The division bench of Justice Sivaganam and Justice V Bhavani Subbarayan upheld the closure of the unit by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCP) in May 2018. The court had reserved its decision in this case on January 9 this year. In the 800-page judgment, the court dismissed the writ petitions filed by Vedanta and others against the order to shut down the unit. There were many violent protests against the unit due to pollution here and now permission to reopen has been rejected.

After this decision from the High Court, many people in Tuticorin have expressed their happiness by distributing sweets and burning firecrackers. In this regard, MK Stalin, president of DMK, the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu, said "he is bowing to the court's decision".
