Mumbai: The Maharashtra Police's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has carried out a major operation. The ATS has arrested seven persons in one of their proceedings, unearthing illegal telephone exchanges. The gang used to prohibit calling charges in the Middle East through an illegal telephone exchange to avoid paying international calling charges. The gang flourished as WhatsApp calls were banned in the Middle East, officials said.

According to ATS officials, they received a secret information that a gang was running an illegal telephone exchange using SIM box technology. Additional Director General of Police of ATS, Deven Bharti said, "Based on specific information, we conducted simultaneous raids in Shivaji Nagar, Masjid Bandar, Dongri, Worli, Panvel and Kalyan and arrested seven persons on Friday. We have sewed one server, 513 SIM cards, nine SIM boxes, three laptops, four computers and seven Wi-Fi routers.

The estimated value of all these is more than Rs 6.5 lakh. The exchange is estimated to cost the government and telecom operators revenue of Rs 37 crore. The arrested persons arrested by the police on Friday have been identified as Nasim Khan (29), Faisal Batliwala (28), Samir Devraj (30), Hussain Sayyed (39), Mandar Achrekar (36), Sibtan Merchant (33) and Imtiaz Sheikh (38). All are being questioned in custody.
