Maharashtra: Dahi Handi program celebrated despite govt's refusal

Mumbai: The Dahi Handi programme was banned in Maharashtra this time too due to the coronavirus crisis. In fact, last Monday was the festival of Janmashtami and in view of this festival, the state government had announced the prohibition of the programme. However, there was a cross-border war between the government and the opposition in the state over the issue. In fact, yesterday, Maharashtra Nava Nirman Sena (MNS) workers performed Dahi Handi in the Dadar area despite the government's refusal.

Everyone here built a pyramid and broke the Handi. MNS workers celebrated the event in the sub-Urban area of Dadar. Let me tell all of you that the Uddhav Government of Maharashtra had banned the programme of Dahi Handi, construction of human pyramids and organizing a big event in view of the Corona crisis. The decision was taken due to the coronavirus crisis. But the BJP was furious over the state government's decision.

BJP has now accused the Uddhav government of disrupting Hindu festivals. Just yesterday, the BJP had said, "They will definitely celebrate the Dahi Handi programme.'' Not only that but notice was also served by the police to BJP leader Ram Kadam. Though Maharashtra has now been somewhat lenient on lockdown and other strictness, the fear of corona is avoiding allowing a major programme. Let me tell you that there are still more than 50,000 corona active cases in the State, and efforts are on to reduce.
