New Delhi: Maharashtra Minister of State Ashok Chavan, who headed the sub-cabinet committee on Maratha reservation, said that the state government would like to appeal to the apex court that the stay on the Maratha reservation case be removed and the matter be heard through a constitutional bench. He said that the case is to be heard by a three-judge bench. Earlier on September 9, the court had imposed an internal ban on reservation in jobs and education for the Maratha community.
The Maharashtra government had petitioned to refer the matter to the Constitutional Bench, which the court has retained for consideration. The hearing on the ban on Maratha reservation is to be heard on Tuesday (27.10.2020) in the bench of three judges. Minister of State Chavan said that we will appeal to the Supreme Court instead of the three judges who stayed the reservation case, the matter should be referred to the Constitutional Bench. Our demand for the constitutional bench is pending with the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Sambhaji Chhatrapati has told the press that the Maratha community is not seeking reservation under the OBC category but the Maratha community should be provided reservation under the Social, Economic Backward Class (SEBC). Rajya Sabha MP Sambhaji said that it is the responsibility of the state government to stand by the Maratha community in the apex court and provide for community reservation.
