Mahua Moitra Faces Third Eviction Notice Amidst Expulsion from Lok Sabha

Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra has been served a third notice to vacate her government residence in New Delhi. The Directorate of Estate, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, issued the notice shortly after her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in connection with the 'cash-for-query' case.

The notice, dated January 8, 2024, requested eviction proceedings under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971. This marks the third notice from the government urging Moitra to vacate her official bungalow.

On January 11, the Ministry of Urban Development had previously served a second notice to Moitra. In response, the TMC leader approached the Delhi High Court, seeking to quash the notice that canceled her government accommodation in the national capital.

The plea highlighted a previous notice from December 11, 2023, instructing her to vacate the house by January 7, 2024. Moitra requested permission to retain possession until the results of the 2024 General Elections. The plea emphasized the importance of government accommodation for her to host and engage with party members, parliamentarians, politicians, constituents, stakeholders, and dignitaries, especially in the lead-up to a general election.

Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, following a discussion on the Ethics Committee's report on the 'cash-for-query' case. She claimed that the committee had violated rules and alleged being found guilty of breaching a code of ethics that she argued "does not exist."

The Ethics Committee's report recommended Moitra's expulsion from the Lok Sabha and called for an intense, time-bound institutional inquiry by the central government into the 'Unethical Conduct' case. The report, adopted by a 6:4 majority, disclosed Moitra's multiple visits to the UAE from 2019 to 2023, with her login accessed several times.
