West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday urged the Centre to temporarily abolish the toll tax and extend the GST deadline for another five years, citing the ongoing trend of fuel price hikes.

"The rise in fuel prices has an impact on people's life. I request that the Centre keep fuel prices under control and temporarily stop collecting tolls. I further propose that the GST time limit be extended for another five years by the central government "The Chief Minister stated.

Banerjee had previously stated that India's economic situation is worse than that of the neighbouring island nation.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo had attacked the Centre over the petrol price hike, saying the central government should debate the country's "economic problems" with all political parties rather than utilising central agencies against the states.

"Sri Lanka's economic situation is poor, but India's situation is even worse. The price of petrol has increased in this country. Rather of deploying the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (against states), the central government should convene a meeting of all political parties to discuss the country's economic crisis "she had said.
