Kolkata: West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has been attacked by the leader of opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari over allegations that the bank accounts of 'Missionaries of Charity' set up by Mother Teresa have been frozen. Suvendu Adhikari has said that Mamata Banerjee should apologise as she has spread wrong information from her official Twitter account. The official said the Union Home Ministry has given a full clarification. He termed Mamata Banerjee's statement as wrong politics.

It may be recalled that the TMC supremo had said in her statement, "I am shocked to hear that on the occasion of Christmas, the Central Government has frozen all bank accounts of mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity in India. Her┬а22,000 patients and staff have been left without food and medicine. Although the status of the law is at the top, the functions of humanitarian service should not be compromised.'' The Central Government has since made it clear that it has not ordered the freezing of bank accounts. The documents also make it clear that the FCRA registration of Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity has neither been suspended nor cancelled. At the same time, the Union Home Ministry has made it clear that it has not ordered the freezing of bank accounts of the institution. Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity has also issued a statement confirming this.

On the other hand, the State Bank of India (SBI) has said that the institution itself had sent a request that its bank accounts be frozen. On the other hand, MHA has said that under the 'Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA),' MoC had filed a petition seeking renewal of its app, but the petition has been dismissed on December 25, 2021.
