Today we may be breathing in independent India, but in freeing India from the slavery of the British, it is the contribution of those great freedom fighters, who did not hesitate to even sacrifice their lives. In fact, the rebellion against British rule had started in the year 1857 itself, in which Mangal Pandey became the forerunner. Who not only bypassed the slavery of the British, but also worked to instil hatred and rebellion against the British rule among the citizens of the country.

Mangal Pandey was born on 19 July 1827 in Nagwa village of Ballia district. Mangal Pandey, born in the family of Sudishta Pandey and poor Brahmin, may have worked in the British army under compulsion, but he had anger against the British and this was the reason that he did not hesitate at all to start the revolt. According to historians, there was discrimination even in the British army at that time. Due to this, the upper caste people were given brass pots to drink water while the lower caste people were given earthen pots.

Historians told that Mangal Pandey's duty was in Barrackpore Cantonment, where sweeper Ramtahal asked constable Mangal Pandey for a pot of water to drink, but he refused. On this, Ramtahal said that if your religion is getting corrupted by giving him a pot or just by touching it, then your religion will be saved by the cartridge given by the British to run it. When Mangal Pandey asked him to clarify, Ramtahal told that cartridges made from the fat of cow and pig are given by the British, whose cap is pulled and used.

It was from here that Mangal Pandey took a rebellious form. The British government did not like Mangal's rebellion and ordered him to be hanged. Finally, on 8 April 1857, Mangal Pandey was hanged for the country. Today, on the birth anniversary of the great revolutionary, Shaheed Mangal Pandey, we pay tribute and honour to him.
