Imphal: The Issue of the Office of Profit in Manipur could come as a big blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Here, 12 MLAs of the party are in danger of being disqualified. During the hearing in the apex court in the case on Thursday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that the Governor of Manipur will soon decide on the opinion given by the Election Commission on the disqualification of 12 BJP MLAs on the issue of office of profit.
In fact, a bench headed by Justice L Nageshwar Rao in the Supreme Court had questioned the governor's decision. This information was then conveyed to the court by the Solicitor General. The Election Commission had sent its opinion to a governor in January on the issue of office of profit. Hearing the case, the apex court said that as per Article 192, the Governor has to make a decision. Nothing has happened in the last 11 months. We don't want to pass another order. Responding to the court, Mehta said that ''I assure you that we will do something on this, there will be no need to pass any kind of direction in this regard.''
Let us tell you that in the earlier hearing, the top court had said that Manipur cannot sit on the opinion given by the Election Commission regarding the disqualification of 12 BJP MLAs on the issue of state benefits. The court's observation came after the bench was told that the governor is yet to make a decision on the opinion of the Election Commission submitted on January 13, 2021.
