The northeast state Manipur will have assembly elections this year, along with Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. From February 27 to March 3, 2022, Manipur will hold two legislative assembly elections to elect 60 members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The Shiv Sena nominated T Thangzalam Haokip, a former deputy speaker of the Manipur assembly, for the upcoming state election on Tuesday. Haokip's name was on the Shiv Sena's second list, which was revealed during the day. He will contest for the Henglep seat in the Churachandpur district. He used to be a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Toijam Debananda Singh has been nominated for the Keirao seat.

The Shiv Sena, which is contesting in Manipur's assembly elections for the first time, unveiled its initial list of six candidates on Monday. In addition, the BJP stated that it will fight for all 60 seats in the Manipur assembly elections, as well as a list of candidates. Among the 16 MLAs who have joined the BJP in Manipur, at least ten former Congress leaders have been given tickets.

Several BJP leaders have resigned from the party's primary membership, including some who were seeking for party tickets but were turned up in order to make place for recent defectors. On the other side, Congress presented its second list of ten candidates on Tuesday. The votes will be counted and the results will be revealed on March 10, 2022.

After forging a coalition with the National People's Party, the Naga People's Front, and the Lok Janshakti Party, N. Biren Singh was sworn in as Chief Minister on March 15, 2017. For the first time in Manipur, the Bharatiya Janata Party has formed a government.
