Meghalaya: Current water level of Umiam reservoir is 3207.42 feet, flood warning issued

Shillong : Chief Engineer, Hydro Planning & Hydro Construction, PGCL Shillong, M Rimbai announced that the current water level of Umiam Reservoir is 3207.42 ft on the morning of 8th September. Therefore, in case of heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the radial gate of the Umiam concrete dam will need to be opened so that the excess water can be released from the reservoir. In view of this, the Meghalaya administration has issued a high alert. In a letter issued to the Deputy Commissioners of two districts of Assam, Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R), it has been said that there is a possibility of flood in the areas beyond the Umiam river and the Umiam dam in the next two or three days. Therefore, both the districts of Assam have been put on high alert regarding possible floods.

Further, the Meghalaya government announced, "All persons living or working downstream of the Umiam Concrete Dam have been asked not to engage in any activity near the banks of the Umiam River. As the water level in the river suddenly rises." All efforts will be made to minimize the discharge of water through the dam gates."
