NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday, March 1,  suspended the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence of the prominent public Regulator for Policy Research, citing non-compliance of FCRA norms.

It is known that the Regulators FCRA licence was suspended last week as a result of prima facie evidence of a violation of these funding standards.

The Centre for Policy Research is a nonprofit organization dedicated to undertaking research that enhances policies and fosters vigorous public debates about topics that have an impact on Indian citizens' quality of life.

After Income Tax studies on CPR and Oxfam India in September 2022, the FCRA licence came under examination. Following the cancellation of Oxfam's FCRA licence in January 2022, the Organisation submitted a petition for modification to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to a senior government official, a number of NGOs and organisations are still waiting for the processing of their review and renewal applications, and some licences have been suspended or have recently expired.
About 6,000 NGOs that had their licences cancelled earlier this year appealed to the Supreme Court for redress, but the court dismissed their requests.

The FCRA regulations aim at prohibiting acceptance and utilization of foreign contributions or foreign hospitality for any activities detrimental to the national interest. FCRA Rules 2022 permits Indians to receive up to Rs 10 lakh in a year from relatives staying abroad without informing the authorities.
