Anakapalli: These Buddhist sites are located on the Bojannakonda and Lingala hills in the village of Sankaram in Visakhapatnam district. The main cave at Bojannakonda, which is unique to this place, as well as many rare structures are in danger of being quarried by explosions. The pillars of the cave, which are 30 feet long and 8 feet high, are built on 16 pillars. Experts estimate that the accident was caused by mining vibrations. According to a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mining, Bojannakonda, an area of 23 acres, is constantly being damaged by the unique architecture of Lingalakonda.

There is a 140 hectare hill in Martur, three kilometers from Bojannakonda. It has been leased by some big people under benami names and has been engaged in heavy mining activities for 30 years. The Bureau of Mining at the time examined the situation and found that blasting within 3 to 6 km of the Bojannakonda range would damage the most valuable architecture. However, quarry excavations continue to this day as a threat to the caves and brick structures here.

Archaeological sites such as Bojannakonda have already been reported to be damaged by mining. We will look into past reports and find out how much damage is actually being done by quarry operations and take definite action. - Pratap Reddy, AD, Mining Vigilance
