Actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has been allotted the battery torch symbol only for Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu, the symbol has gone to MGR Makkal Katchi. This could be a setback to the MNM as Haasan formally announced earlier that he will contest the polls. The party, which was formed in 2018, contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections under the battery torch symbol but Haasan wasn’t in the fray.

Following this, Kamal Haasan's MNM on Thursday approached the Election Commission (EC) over the allotment of the 'Battery Torch' symbol to MGR Makkal Katchi for 2021 Tamil Nadu elections.

The MNM contested the general election under the Battery Torch symbol. Haasan, who kick-started his party's campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls on Sunday, had confirmed about contesting the 2021 elections, adding that he will announce the constituency, from which he will contest in the coming days.
