New Delhi: The government is considering to give fertilizer subsidy to farmers directly in their bank account under phase II of direct benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme. A high official of the fertilizer ministry informed about the same. The first phase of fertilizer DBT was launched in October 2017 under which subsidy is being transferred to the companies after examining the data of retail sales registered through point of sale (POS) machines.

After consultation with Niti Aayog in the second phase of DBT, the amount of manure subsidy was to be directly put into the bank accounts of the farmers. The government carries a burden of more than Rs. 70, 000 crore annually as fertilizer subsidy for providing cheaper agricultural nutrition to farmers. The official said, "We are trying to give fertilizer subsidy directly to farmers ' bank accounts. We are now ready for implementation in phase two phases. It is churning out when and how to implement it. '

At the same time, the government is planning to bring some improvements in the current fertilizer DBT by allowing retailers to use desktops or laptops with POS machines for smooth operation. The official said that, "now, the DBT platform is based on POS machine. We are coming up with desktop or laptop version. As the screen is smaller in the POS machine, retailers sometimes face operational constraints. With POS, retailers can have desktops or laptops. "There are 2.25 lakh fertilizer retailers in the country, POS machines will not be abolished," he added.
