NEW DELHI: The monsoon season has made its presence felt across the entire country, marking its arrival with heavy downpours. The India Meteorological Department predicts that many Indian states will continue to experience significant rainfall until the upcoming weekend. Although this year's monsoon experienced a slight delay due to the occurrence of cyclone Biparjoy, it eventually covered a majority of the southern and western regions of India.
The advent of the monsoon has brought much-needed relief to the residents of the plains, who were previously enduring scorching heat. Furthermore, farmers cultivating cereals have also benefited from the rainfall.
However, the relentless rain that commenced last week has had an adverse impact on tomato crops, leading to an increase in prices. Keeping in line with this weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow' alert for the coastal state of Goa until Thursday, 29 June. Over the past 24 hours, heavy rains have been pounding various parts of Goa, effectively breaking a prolonged dry spell.
Disaster management authorities need to remain vigilant as the possibility of rain-related disasters or flooding looms. Recent data from the weather office indicates that several regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, experienced intense rainfall on Tuesday.
In Delhi, the early showers on Tuesday led to a slight drop in the minimum temperature, reaching 24.5°C (four degrees below normal). The maximum temperature also decreased to 34.8°C (two degrees below normal). While authorities focused on strengthening infrastructure and preparing for the upcoming rainy days, it is crucial to remain alert and ready for potential challenges caused by heavy rainfall.
