Bangalore: In the Islamic country of Iran, even though Muslim women themselves are burning hijabs on the streets demanding freedom from the fundamentalist government and demanding their rights, the issue of 'first hijab then book' is still burning in the secular country India. The order banning the hijab in schools in Karnataka may not have had any significant impact on the attendance of students or enrollment of girls in examinations. However, the Udupi district, which has been the epicenter of protests against the hijab ban in the state, has registered a decline in the number of Muslim students.

According to media reports, the number of Muslim students has decreased in government and private Pre-University Colleges (PUC) in Udupi. Reports show that all pre-university colleges in Udupi have almost the same number of Muslim students enrolled in class 11 (earlier known as PUC or PUC I in Karnataka). While there were 1,296 Muslim students in the state in 2021-22, their number became 1,320 in 2022-23. However, their enrollment in the government PUC has halved compared to last year. This number is the lowest in the last five years.

According to the report, 388 Muslim students took admission in Government Pre-University Colleges (PUC) of Udupi in 2021-22 and 186 in 2022-23. On the other hand, if we talk gender-wise, 91 Muslim girls have enrolled in the government PUC I this year as compared to 178 in 2021-22 and the enrollment of Muslim students has come down from 210 to 95.

Admission of Muslims increased in private colleges:-

On the other hand, enrollment of minority students in private (or unaided) pre-university colleges in the district has increased. In 2022-23, 927 Muslim students have taken admission in PUC I in unaided colleges. Their number was 662 in 2021-22. At the same time, the number of Muslim boys in private colleges has increased from 334 to 440 and that of girls from 328 to 487.
