Kolkata: Protests against the Citizenship Law (CAA) and National Citizenship Register (NRC) continue in many parts of the country. In West Bengal, people have been sitting on a sit-in demonstration on the lines of Shaheen Bagh in Delhi. The veteran Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram, who arrived in Kolkata, organized a leadership training camp for the state party leaders at CAA, NPR and NRC.
Earlier on Friday, P. Chidambaram in Kolkata attended the ongoing protest against CAA at Park Circus and assured the attendees that his party was with him. Chidambaram arrived at the Park Circus ground late on Friday evening. The protesters targeted him by raising slogans against the BJP-led government at the Center. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram spent some time with the protesters and also held discussions with some of them.
The protests at Kolkata's Park Circus are being described as a version of the ongoing protests in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, which consists mainly of Muslim women, who have been sitting on a sit-in for 12 days against the CAA, NRC and NPR. Like Shaheen Bagh here too, on January 7, a large number of women in the local park gathered to express concern, disappointment and anger over what is happening in the country.
