All of you will be surprised to know that for the first time in the country, the population of women has increased as compared to men. Under recent information, there are now 1,020 women per 1,000 men. This is said to be the first time since Independence that the population of women has reached more than 1,000 as compared to men. According to reports, the figure has been revealed in the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5). In fact, in the NFHS-4 held earlier in 2015-16, the figure was 991 women per 1,000 men.
Not only that, but the sex ratio has improved at birth also. In 2015-16, it was 919 girls per 1000 children, which has increased to 929 per 1000 children in 2019-21. Coming to the figures of NFHS-5, it has come out of them that the improvement in sex ratio has improved in villages as compared to cities. There are said to be 1,037 women per 1,000 men in villages, while 985 are women in cities. The same thing came to light in NFHS-4. According to the survey, there were 1,009 women per 1,000 males in the villages and the figure was 956 in cities. At the same time, let me tell you that there are 23 States in the country where there is a population of more than 1,000 women per 1000 males.
In fact, there are 1017 women per thousand men in Uttar Pradesh, 1090 in Bihar, 913 in Delhi, 970 in Madhya Pradesh, 1009 in Rajasthan, 1015 in Chhattisgarh, 966 in Maharashtra, 938 in Punjab, 926 in Haryana, 1050 in Jharkhand. In 1901, the sex ratio was 972 women per thousand men, but after independence, the number began to decrease. In 1951, the figure came down to 946 women per 1,000 men. In 1971, it came down further to 930. Subsequently, according to the 2011 Census, the figure improved slightly and the female population per thousand males has reached 940.
