Mumbai: Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case, is in "critical" condition after being admitted to a government-run JJ Hospital on complaints of fever and diarrhoea. This news was given by his advocate to a special court in Mumbai. The hospital said the minister is under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and his condition is stable.
Last week, 62-year-old Nawab Malik, lodged in Arthur Road Jail here, had sought interim bail on medical grounds from the Special Court set up to hear criminal cases against MPs and MLAs. However, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed the interim bail plea, calling it an attempt by Malik to "escape from the clutches of law".
When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, Malik's advocate Kushal Mor told the court that when the NCP leader's family members went to give him home cooked food, he was told that he had been shifted to the government-run JJ Hospital. . Mor told the court that Malik, who was arrested more than two months ago, has been ill for the past three days and his condition has worsened and is "serious". Sanjay Surase, medical superintendent of Sir JJ Hospital, said that Malik was brought to the hospital at 10 am. "He complained of stomach upset and his blood pressure was not stable. He has been kept in the ICU and his condition is stable," Surase said.
