NCERT Introduces New Evaluation Model: Major Overhaul in Class 12 Board Exams:

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled a significant change to the Class 12 board exams by introducing a new evaluation model. This model will now factor in students' performance from Classes 9 to 11, alongside incorporating vocational and skill-based training into their assessments.

The new evaluation approach, developed by NCERT’s Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), redefines the weightage of marks from previous years. According to this model, Class 12 board exam scores will be based on 15% from Class 9, 20% from Class 10, 25% from Class 11, and 40% from Class 12 itself.

The PARAKH report, named 'Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards,' recommends using cumulative performance data from Classes 9 through 11 to determine Class 12 results. The new marking scheme redistributes assessment weight as follows: Class 9 will see 70% based on formative assessments and 30% on summative assessments; Class 10 will have an equal split of 50% for both formative and summative assessments; Class 11 will allocate 40% to formative assessments and 60% to summative assessments; and Class 12 will be assessed with 30% formative and 70% summative assessments.

PARAKH, a regulatory body formed by NCERT for the Ministry of Education, has long advocated for a unified assessment system across Indian educational boards. The new report also suggests incorporating vocational subjects such as Data Management, Coding, Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, Music, Arts, and Crafts into the curriculum.

Additionally, the report highlights the need to improve school infrastructure, including ensuring access to clean water, well-stocked libraries, and sufficient sports facilities, to foster a better learning environment. It also stresses the importance of evaluating teacher performance to enhance educational quality.
