CHENNAI: The anti-NEET Bill rallies against Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi have become more tense. On Tuesday, activists from the Dalit organisation Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Dravida Kazhagam (DK), as well as CPI and CPI-M workers, conducted a black flag demonstration against Ravi in Myladuthurai.
The DMK has been criticising the Governor for failing to recommend to the President the anti-NEET Bill that was voted overwhelmingly by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for the second time. M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, had voiced his displeasure with the Governor for failing to forward the Bill, and had boycotted the Raj Bhavan's 'At-Home' celebrations for the Tamil New Year, 'Puthandu.'
When the Governor was on his way to the Sri Abhirami Amirtha Kadeswarar Thirukadaiyur temple in Dharmapuram Adheenam Mutt, a large police detachment was prepared to prevent any untoward incidents, however protesters waved black flags at him and others tossed the flags on the road.
When a group of BJP members arrived to greet the Governor, police intervened to prevent a heated scenario. The local leaders of the VCK, DK, and Left parties met with Adheenam Mutt officials and voiced their displeasure with the Governor's invitation to the celebration.
According to police, 60 people were detained in Myladuthurai for waving black flags in front of the Governor, including members of the DK, VCK, and Left parties. R. Lalitha, the Myladuthurai District Collector, had earlier received the Governor according to custom.
