Bangalore: On the morning of November 19, a tragic incident unfolded in Whitefield, Bengaluru, when a 23-year-old woman, Soundharya, and her nine-month-old daughter, Suviksha, were electrocuted near the Hope Farm intersection. The mother and daughter, residents of AKG Colony, were on their way to Soundharya's mother's house when the incident occurred around 6 am. Having recently returned to Bengaluru from Tamil Nadu, Soundharya stepped on a live wire lying unattended on the footpath, resulting in electrocution. The bodies were taken to Vydehi Hospital for postmortem, and the Kadugodi police, informed by passersby, arrived at the scene.
The police have registered a case of negligence against the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), the service provider responsible for the live wire. Three BESCOM employees have been taken into custody for questioning. In response to the tragic incident, Whitefield Rising, a community organization, called for severe punishment for those responsible. Deputy Commissioner Of Police Whitefield, Shivakumar Gunare, stated that an investigation has been initiated, and BESCOM officials and staff are being interrogated. Expressing condolences, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan described the incident as heartbreaking and emphasized the urgent need for BESCOM to adopt preventive measures to ensure a safer environment.
The police revealed that fallen fiber-optic wires, often mistaken for harmless cables, remain on the sidewalk at various locations in the city. Soundharya reportedly believed the live wire was a fiber-optic cable when she walked on it. Her spouse, employed in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, is now grappling with the loss. Similar electrocution incidents have occurred in Bengaluru in the past, highlighting the need for increased safety measures.
