Himachal Pradesh: On Saturday, July 22, a landslide occurred near Wangtu in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, leading to the closure of National Highway 5. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Saturday. Also, a yellow warning has been put in place for heavy rainfall at a few locations in the state from 23rd to 25th July.

Yesterday, Himachal Pradesh experienced varying degrees of rainfall, ranging from light to heavy.

Recent weather data reveals that Palampur received the highest amount of rainfall in the state in the past 24 hours, with a recording of 147 mm. Following that, Dharamshala received 50 mm, Manali 34 mm, and Dalhousie 27 mm.

Rainfall Predictions for Saturday in Himachal Pradesh: According to the meteorological department, extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan, and Sirmaur. Furthermore, heavy rainfall is anticipated in Una, Hamirpur, Lahaul and Spiti, and Kinnaur districts on 22nd July.

Monsoon Fury in Himachal: Since the monsoon's onset in the hill state on June 24th, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed unfortunate incidents, resulting in 138 fatalities due to landslides, flash floods, and road accidents, as reported by the Himachal Pradesh State Emergency Response Centre. The state has incurred a loss of Rs. 4,986 crore.

The calamitous impact is evident with 586 houses completely damaged and 5,030 partially damaged. Damaged properties also include 234 shops and 1,500 cowsheds across the state. Presently, 605 roads remain closed as per government officials.

Centre's Aid for Rain-Hit Himachal: To alleviate the situation, the Central government has extended assistance amounting to over Rs. 360 crore to the state.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has assured the sanctioning of Rs. 300 crore for the reconstruction of damaged roads and bridges connecting national highways in Himachal Pradesh. This fund will be provided under the Setu Bharatam Yojna.

The ruling Congress government has taken measures to provide compensation of Rs. 1,45,000 to those whose houses were completely damaged and Rs. 1 lakh to those with partially damaged houses.
