NIA Raids 45 Locations in TN over Coimbatore Car Blast Case

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been searching 45 places in Tamil Nadu as part of its ongoing investigation into the LPG cylinder explosion that happened in a car on October 23 in Coimbatore, source said.

On October 23, in the early hours of the morning, Jameesha Mubin, 29, was killed in a car explosion close to a temple in Coimbatore.

Early on Thursday, NIA officials began conducting raids at the homes of people connected to occurrences in premises of Kottamedu, Ponvizha Nagar, Rathinapuri, and Ukkadam in coordiation with the state police.

Nearly 15 days after the Ministry of Home Affairs' Counter Terrorism and Counter Radicalization (CTCR) division issued an order requesting that an investigation into the situation be launched, the Central Anti-Terrorism Agency conducted its extensive search.

A day after MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, suggested that the NIA look into the case, the MHA issued its directive. In a letter of recommendation to the MHA, Stalin asked that the NIA take over the investigation of the automobile cylinder explosion case in Coimbatore's Ukkadam area and gave police instructions to maintain security in the city.

More than six people have been detained by Tamil Nadu Police in connection with the case so far, and they have used the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act as justification (UAPA).

Those detained, as per information obtained, are Jameesha Mubin's friends. Jameesha Mubin was found burnt to death in suspicious circumstances when an LPG cylinder in the Maruti 800 he was driving exploded at 4 am near a temple.

The police said, Mubin, 25, an engineering graduate, was previously questioned by NIA agents in 2019 for potential ties to terrorism. He is identified as the case's main defendant by name.

Mohammad Thalka (age 25), Mohammad Asarudheen (age 25), Muhammad Riyaz (age 27), Feroz Ismail (age 27), Mohammad Navaz Ismail (age 27), and Afsar Khan, a relative of the deceased, are among those detained. The special investigation team chose Khan, the deceased's cousin, two days before to the explosion.
The explosion happened in Ukkadam, a sensitive area.

The state police claimed to have found explosive-making supplies at Mubin's Ukkadam home during a raid. 75 kg of potassium nitrate, charcoal, aluminium powder, and sulphur, all of which are used in the manufacture of explosives, were also seized.
