NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force (CRPF), responsible for securing the Delhi Metro and airports nationwide, has appointed its inaugural female chief.

Nina Singh, an IPS officer of the 1989 Rajasthan cadre batch, previously serving as the Special DG of CISF, secures the esteemed position of Director General, marking a groundbreaking ascent for women in the central force. Her tenure at CISF commenced in 2021 and is set to continue until her retirement on July 31 next year.

Simultaneously, Anish Dayal Singh, former head of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), takes the helm as the Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) among the series of new appointments.

Hailing from Bihar, Nina Singh pursued her education at Patna Women's College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, later obtaining a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.

Her distinguished career boasts several notable accomplishments, notably as the first woman to hold the highest police position in Rajasthan. In the state police force, only six officers currently occupy the Director General rank.

In the past, Nina Singh spearheaded a pioneering outreach program during her tenure as a member secretary for the State Women's Commission in 2000. This initiative involved commission members visiting districts to conduct hearings for distressed women.

Additionally, she has collaborated on research papers with Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo. Furthermore, she contributed to a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) project in 2005-2006, aiming to enhance the accessibility of police stations.

Notably, during her tenure as Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from 2013 to 2018, she oversaw high-profile cases such as the Sheena Bora murder case and the Jiah Khan suicide case. In recognition of her professional excellence, she received the Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal in 2020.

Rohit Kumar Singh, her husband, is an Indian Administrative Service officer currently serving as the Secretary of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry.

The CISF, comprising a robust force of 1.76 lakh personnel, stands mandated to protect the Delhi Metro, civil airports, and sensitive installations within the aerospace and nuclear domains.
