Nizamabad: Due to heavy fall in the yield of onion due to incessant rains, there was a huge increase in the prices of onions. Onion price has increased by Rs 12 per kg. Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts will import onions from the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka during September, October and November. Local traders said that usually Nizamabad gets five to six lorries laden with onions daily from Maharashtra. But now only three to four lorries were coming due to the increase in prices. Traders believe that this situation will continue till the new produce arrives in the markets of Maharashtra by the end of October.

Onion crops in Karnataka and Rajasthan were damaged due to rains, while in Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Dhule and Solapur districts of Maharashtra and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, crop was damaged due to pest infestation. According to market sources, onion prices will continue to compete with petrol prices till the end of October.

On Thursday, the price of white onion rose to Rs 52 per kg in Nizamabad against Rs 15 or Rs 20 on normal days. In Maharashtra, the largest producer of onions, the wholesale market price ranges between Rs 40 and Rs 45 per kg. Traders said that onion transport charges have been increased by Rs 9 per kg. Due to this, the price of onion rose to Rs 49 in Nizamabad wholesale market and Rs 52 in retail market. Red onion of the second category is being sold from Rs 35 to Rs 40 per kg.
