New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the program for the by-election of two vacant seats in Rajya Sabha. Polling will be held on October 16 for each Rajya Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Both seats are vacant due to the demise of former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and senior Supreme Court advocate and former Union Minister Ram Jethmalani.
It is noteworthy that former Finance Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran leader Arun Jaitley died on August 24 after a long illness. A few days after his death, on September 8, the same month, senior Supreme Court lawyer Ram Jethmalani died. Arun Jaitley was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from BJP and from Jethmalani Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) quota.
The Election Commission will issue a by-election notification for both the vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha from September 27 i.e. Friday and the nomination process will start from the same day. The last date for nomination for Rajya Sabha is 4 October and the nomination papers will be scrutinized on 5 October. October 9 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Whereas on 16 October, the Election Commission has set the day of voting.
