New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued notices to all states and union territories, ordering a detailed probe into madrasas admitting non-Muslim children. Along with this, chief secretaries have also been asked to map all madrasas.

NCPCR president Priyank Kanoongo has given these instructions while writing a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories. The NCPCR Chief in its instructions said that the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights recommends a detailed investigation of all government-funded/recognized madrassas which are admitting non-Muslim children. The NCPCR has said in the letter that it has received several complaints that children from non-Muslim communities are being given admission in government-funded madrasas and they are also being given scholarships.

According to the letter, "this is a clear violation of Article 28(3) of the Constitution, which prohibits educational institutions from forcing children to participate in religious education without parental consent." NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanoongo also said that madrassas are primarily responsible for imparting religious education. Whereas those which are funded by the government, are giving religious and to some extent formal education to the children.
