CANBERRA: Tennis player Novak Djokovic can now compete in the Australian Open after the Australian government reversed a travel ban.

Immigration Minister Andrew Giles stated on Thursday that Djokovic has been given a temporary visa to enter the nation. This happened around ten months after the Serbian was stopped in Melbourne on the night of the Grand Slam for trying to enter the nation without having had a COVID-19 vaccination.

After a court dispute, Djokovic was expelled and given a three-year automatic entry ban from Australia. Giles' ruling nullifies that rule.

He announced the lifting of harsh border controls that prevented non-citizens who were not immunised from entering the nation.

"All COVID-19-related Australian border limitations under the Biosecurity Act 2015 have been abolished since the cancellation of Mr. Djokovic's visa in January 2022, including the necessity to present documentation of COVID-19 vaccination status to enter Australia." Djokovic was going for his fourth straight Melbourne Park men's singles championship when he was deported.

At the ATP Finals in Turin, Djokovic stated he was "extremely delighted" to be going back to Australia.

"Without a doubt, during this tournament as well, I could not have gotten greater news. My best grand slam result came at the Australian Open. There, I created some of my favourite memories "says he.
The Australian Open in 2023 will take place from January 16 to 29.
