GUWAHATI: Priyanka Gandhi has been under criticism ever since Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi's 'Bhaiya' remark. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has now questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's parents, has targeted his sister Priyanka Gandhi. Chief Minister Himanta tweeted, "Days after her brother sermonized us on diversity & 'spirit of India,' albeit brazenly ignoring North East, Smt Priyanka Gandhi is seen cheering Punjab CM Sri Charanjit S Channi on his despicable comments against people of Bihar & UP! Hypocrisy & politics of Tukde Tukde at best!"

In fact, the CM has attacked Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi for his remarks that 'Don't let 'Bhaiya from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar' come to Punjab.' The video of Channi's controversial statement is going viral, in which Priyanka is seen smiling and clapping at the chief minister's statement. The scene was witnessed in the wake of the Congress rally in Rupnagar, Punjab. The Punjab CM said, "Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter-in-law of Punjab. Brothers of UP, Bihar, Delhi, who want to rule Punjab, we will not allow them to enter the state.''

The same has sparked a political uproar after Channi's statement. Several political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, have come under severe criticism. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal responded by saying, "It is very shameful. We strongly condemn comments made with the aim of an individual or a particular community. Priyanka Gandhi also belongs to Uttar Pradesh so she is also 'Bhaiya'.'' Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani also called the statement "bad and shameful." Smriti Irani said the Bharatiya Janata Party united the people, the Congress divided them. She described Channi's statement as against the spirit of Indianness.
