OpenAI has introduced a new search tool called SearchGPT, which aims to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine market. This innovative prototype promises to deliver “fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources,” according to OpenAI's announcement on Thursday.

SearchGPT leverages the conversational abilities of OpenAI's AI models combined with real-time web information. This integration ensures users receive answers with “clear, in-line, named attribution and links,” providing transparency about the sources of information.

A standout feature of SearchGPT is its ability to handle follow-up questions, creating a more interactive and context-aware user experience. This feature is designed to refine how users engage with AI by building on shared context.

Currently, SearchGPT is in the testing phase with a select group of users and publishers, including The Atlantic and News Corp. OpenAI is inviting others to join the waitlist for access. Even if some websites opt out of contributing to AI training, they may still appear in search results.

This announcement follows Microsoft's recent decision to step down from its observer role on OpenAI's board, a position it held during CEO Sam Altman's reinstatement in 2023. It also comes amid an FTC investigation into Microsoft's $13 billion investment in OpenAI.

Founded in 2015, OpenAI reached $3.4 billion in annual recurring revenue as of May 2024.
