New Delhi: In a proactive response to the recent surge of hostilities in the region, India has launched "Operation Ajay," aimed at facilitating the return of its citizens stranded in Israel. The operation comes in the wake of heightened tensions, sparked by a series of audacious attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli towns over the past weekend. At present, it is estimated that approximately 18,000 Indian nationals reside in Israel.

External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, took to social media on Wednesday to announce this critical mission. He declared, "Launching #OperationAjay to facilitate the return from Israel of our citizens who wish to return."

Here are five key insights into Operation Ajay:

Special Charter Flights and Safety Measures: To ensure the safe repatriation of Indian nationals, special charter flights and other arrangements are being meticulously organized. Minister Jaishankar emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.

First Batch of Evacuees: The first batch of Indians stranded in Israel is expected to be repatriated on Thursday via a dedicated special flight. The Indian embassy in Israel has already dispatched emails to the initial group of registered Indian citizens, who will be part of this initial evacuation wave.

Round-the-Clock Control Room: To monitor the evolving situation in the conflict-stricken areas and provide vital information and assistance to Indian citizens, a 24/7 control room has been established in New Delhi. Additionally, separate emergency helplines have been set up in Tel Aviv and Ramallah.

International Diplomacy: Minister Jaishankar also disclosed that he has been in direct communication with his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates to discuss the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Both nations have agreed to maintain regular communication.

Minister Jaishankar stated, "Spoke to Foreign Minister @ABZayed of UAE this evening. Discussed the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Agreed to stay in touch."

Escalating Conflict in the Region: The Operation is being launched in the context of escalating violence in the region. Hamas militants from Gaza have launched multiple attacks on Israeli territories since last Saturday, leading to a series of retaliatory actions by Israel. This ongoing conflict has tragically resulted in an estimated 2,150 casualties, with Israeli authorities reporting over 1,200 deaths, including 155 soldiers, while the Palestinian side has counted around 950 fatalities in Gaza.

Operation Ajay stands as a testament to India's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad during times of crisis. The repatriation efforts are expected to continue as the situation in the region evolves.
