Bhubaneshwar: Hemp cultivation in forest and visible land near the village of Thatipali Mouja, under Manmunda police station in the Buddhist district of Odisha, has been destroyed. According to the information, 2 lakh 15 thousand hemp plants planted in about 107 acres of land have been destroyed by burning, which is estimated to cost Rs 11 crore.

On the instructions of the Superintendent of Police of the Buddhist District, the officials of Excise Department, Revenue Department and Forest Department along with Manmunda police station raided and set fire to the hemp crop. It is noteworthy that according to the Indian constitution, the cultivation of hemp is illegal and the proposal to cultivate the hemp that came in the past was also rejected by the Excise Department. Excise Department Secretary Sushil Kumar Lohani has clearly stated that the government cannot encourage the cultivation of hemp in any way.

Hemp cultivation is illegal in the state and no institution can be allowed to cultivate it. In such a situation, wherever the information about hemp farming is regularly received, the administration is taking strict steps on it and destroying the crop. However, the administration has also faced opposition from the people for this. Under this, today, the department has destroyed Rs 11 crore hemp crop in the Buddhist district.
