Bhubaneswar: The Odisha High Court allowed a gay couple to live together, saying that despite different gender identities, humans have the right to take full advantage of their rights. A division bench of Justice SK Mishra and Justice Savitri Ratho was hearing a habeas corpus petition of 24-year-old Transman (who was a woman at birth) earlier this week.

During the hearing, the court said, "The state should give them all kinds of protection including the right to life, right to equality before the law and equal protection of the law." The petitioner, who identified himself as a man, said that his partner's mother and relatives had forcibly taken him to Jaipur and they are going to get him married to another, which led him to approach the court. Justice SK Mishra, who is heading the bench, pronounced that the couple had every right to decide on their sexual preference and directed Jaipur SP to ensure that the petitioner's partner could live with him in Bhubaneswar.

The court said that the woman's mother and sister would be allowed to meet the man at the petitioner's house. Justice Savitri Ratho said that freedom of choice is for both those who have decided to live together. This time the corona infection is at a peak. In the last 24 hours, more than 75 thousand cases have been reported in the country, which is the highest number of people infected with corona in one day in the last five months.
