New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on a four-day visit to India. This political development is not digested by Pakistan. In this frustration, Pakistani Rangers opened fire on a Border Security Force (BSF) patrol party in the Arnia sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday morning. People familiar with the development have informed that the BSF has also given a befitting reply. A statement issued by the BSF spokesperson said, "This morning, BSF troops have given a befitting reply to the firing of Pak Rangers on the patrolling team in Arnia sector.''

On February 24, 2021, India and Pakistan agreed to strictly abide by all agreements related to cross-border firing along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir as well as other areas. An official, who did not wish to be named, said there have been no incidents of firing by Pakistani troops in the last one-and-a-half years. But, on Tuesday, this agreement was broken by Pakistan. The incident took place on a day when Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina is on a visit to India.

A second official has said that immediate and effective retaliation is taken by the Indian Army and BSF during incidents of unprovoked firing and ceasefire violations by Pakistan on LoC and IB. Prior to the 2021 agreement, 5,133 incidents of ceasefire violations were reported in 2020, 3,479 in 2019 and 2,140 in 2018. However, these incidents came down to around 700 last year. The figures for 2022 have not been disclosed yet.
