ISLAMABAD:  Pakistan has once more blocked India's efforts to join the UNSC as a permanent member, which it is touting as a diplomatic victory over New Delhi.

Pakistan's position opposing India's UNSC membership and calling for a continuation of the debate on the criteria for membership was accepted, although India lacked the minimal support from other UNSC member states to become a permanent member.

In the ongoing discussion at the UNSC, Pakistan has maintained and underlined a set duration for permanent membership in the body and its election after every two or five years. According to reports, Pakistan objected to India's bid to join the UNSC as a permanent member because it charged New Delhi of breaking the body's rules.

The reports add,  "India lacks getting a two-third majority in the UN Charter, while the Indian group also loses the endorsement of the United States (US)." India, although claiming to have a secular and robust economy, "has also failed to meet the conditions for becoming a UNSC permanent member," Pakistan insisted. To become a permanent member, India needs the support of at least 129 other member states. However, according to diplomatic sources, India was unable to secure the support of even half the necessary governments.

Pakistan had emphasised the need for flexibility in April of this year, when talks to reform the UN Security Council were at a standstill. This was done in order to build the necessary consensus among all UN member states and break the impasse.
