Following the defeat of the government's nominee Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the Senate elections to the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, an upbeat opposition called on Prime Minister Imran Khan "to resign in an honourable manner," as per reports.

After the Senate election results were announced, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), asked Imran Khan, "If he (the prime minister) values honor, he should step down (from the office). Imran Khan should quit today, as the call for his resignation is no longer solely from the opposition, but is also being made by members of the government."

Gilani's triumph, according to the PPP chairman, was also a statement of people's dissatisfaction with the IMF-mandated budget as well as a reaction to the country's current price hikes and unemployment.

With Gilani and other top party leaders, Bilawal spoke during a press conference at the Zardari House. Furthermore, according reports, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Wednesday that following the Senate elections, Prime Minister Imran Khan will request a vote of confidence from parliament.
