Shimla: Virendra Kanwar, Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj of Himachal Pradesh, has said that the elections of Panchayati Raj institutions in the state will be held at a certain time. The process of formation of new Panchayats has been started in the state, and this work will be completed on time. Elections of Panchayati Raj institutions were conducted in the state in December and January, and the election process will be completed on January 22.

On January 22, 2021, the 5-year term of the representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions will be completed. According to the Act, the State Election Commission is required to conduct elections within five years. There is a minimum time period for the formation of panchayats. In such a situation, the government does not want to spend much time in setting up new panchayats.

The state government has taken up the task of conducting elections for Panchayati Raj institutions. In view of this, proposals for new panchayats were sought till the end of August, and proposals for about 470 new panchayats have also reached the government. The state government will also set the criteria for new panchayats soon, and the areas which will be able to meet this will be given the status of the new panchayat. Among the parameters, the population of the place, a number of houses and distance from Panchayat headquarters can be made the basis. Election officer of the State Election Commission, Sanjeev Mahajan, says that after the formation of new panchayats in the state, the process for conducting elections will go on. After the reservation of posts in the panchayats, the Election Commission will prepare a fresh voter list. With this, the date has now been set.
