Paoli Dam who had played a key role in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s critically acclaimed film ‘Tope’ is at a loss for words. Memories with the master filmmaker who passed away yesterday crowd Paoli’s mind now. Sharing her thoughts on Buddhadeb Dasgupta, the actress pays her tribute with a broken heart. “His films were more than just films, they were a lesson on filmmaking, philosophy, life and perspective. I remember the day when I went to Mitra Cinema to watch ‘Mondo Meyer Upakhyan’, I came back with a feeling that stayed with me for a long time… I knew it was not like the other films I was watching at the time, I knew that all films needed to have a similar depth, a similar connect with the audience’s mind and needed to linger on, much after you’ve left the theatre. Cut to 2008, I was working with the man himself. I was going to be in two episodes: Dhauli and Choli Ke Peeche for Doordarshan that he was directing,” adds Paoli Dam
She adds in a Buddhadeb Dasgupta set, one wouldn’t be anything else but a learner and that’s exactly what happened with her. “He was poetic in his storytelling and while shooting, he maintained strict discipline. His love for long shots demanded that his actors maintained the same discipline. I am glad that I was receptive enough and never, ever did I get scolded by him. Working with him was unlike any experience I had had at that time… It was unique. Needless to say, his approach seeded from his deep-found love, passion and personalisation of the craft. He had a terrific sense of humour and his eyes were everywhere. ,” adds Paoli.
