CALICUT: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has made a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre, alleging that the inauguration of the new Parliament building was yet another illustration of the "deliberate attempts" being made to "attack democracy" in the nation.

The Chief Minister was speaking an event in memory of late minister MP Veerendrakumar on Sunday. Addressing the  occasion, CM Vijayan stated, "The opening of Parliament is the finest example of the deliberate attacks on democracy that are occurring today. Secularism is under intense attack in our nation. The RSS wants to convert India into a religious nation because they disagree with it being a secular country. The "religious ceremony" shouldn't take place in the Parliament,  CM Vijayan remarked

"In a democratic administration, what occurred in the Parliament should not be happening. It turned into a religious ceremony for a specific religion, which is inappropriate for a secular country. A crucial period is being experienced by the nation. Numerous groups are threatening democracy. The BJP wants a religious nation, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the new Parliament building to the country earlier on Sunday. In addition, he put the revered "Sengol" immediately next to the Lok Sabha chairman's chair and took part in the "sarva dharma prarthana" (multi-faith prayer), during which priests of all faiths chanted their respective verses. The CM of Kerala further slammed the BJP-led Central Government over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"We are all citizens of India. Because India is a secular country, our citizenship was not determined by our faith. However, the CAA was implemented in our nation, overturning all preexisting guidelines. It was done to prove that citizenship is determined by an individual's faith. In the nation, there was a loud protest against this. Kerala previously stated that it wouldn't be applied here. We still support it," he remarked.
