Melbourne: Australia captain Pat Cummins says the Indian Premier League (IPL) has ended the monopoly of international cricket on players time and said it will be extremely challenging in the future to convince players to value the national team over franchise cricket. He said that the IPL had changed the landscape of cricket a decade ago and he seemed to agree with Trent Boult's decision to turn down New Zealand Cricket's contract and play in T20 leagues around the world.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC Final) final against Team India at the Oval from June 7, Cummins said, "For some time it seemed that this was going to happen and now it is happening. International cricket no longer has the same monopoly on players' time. IPL changed that a decade ago, but now more and more players are joining it and so I believe we have to be proactive about it."

Cummins wants his players to prioritise the national team over anything else, but said it would be challenging to do so in the current times of a high-money franchise-based league. "We have to make playing for Australia as special as we can, but it's going to be a challenge. We should seriously think about it."
