New Delhi – On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged countries of the Global South to unite and support each other amid pressing global challenges. Speaking at the Voice of Global South Summit 3.0, hosted by India in a virtual format, PM Modi emphasized the need for solidarity and strength among these nations during a time marked by geopolitical tensions and climate change.

In his opening address, PM Modi highlighted the growing concerns beyond climate change, including health security, food security, and energy security. He also pointed out the widening technology divide and emerging economic and social challenges.

“We must address the issues brought about by conflict and climate change to ensure our development progresses,” PM Modi stated. He also mentioned terrorism, extremism, and separatism as ongoing threats to societies around the world.

The Prime Minister criticized the global governance and financial institutions established in the last century, suggesting they have not adequately addressed the challenges of today.

“Let us recognize and learn from the experiences of two-thirds of humanity. By sharing our strengths and working together, we can achieve our goals,” he encouraged.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Global South nations by sharing its experiences and resources. Reflecting on India’s G20 presidency in 2022, he noted the country’s efforts to reform the G20 and establish the Voice of Global South Summit as a key platform for discussing development priorities.

Under India’s leadership, the G20 adopted an inclusive approach, highlighted by the historic addition of the African Union as a permanent member.

“This summit comes at a time of global uncertainty. The impact of COVID-19 lingers, and ongoing conflicts continue to challenge our development,” PM Modi said.

The third Voice of Global South Summit, themed ‘An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future,’ aims to build on previous discussions and tackle critical issues such as conflicts, food and energy security crises, and climate change affecting developing nations.
