PM Modi hails deployment of Indian women peacekeepers in Abyei

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, January 6,  praised the participation of largest Indian women UNA peacekeeping contingent to be deployed in Abyei.

"I'm Proud to see this. India has a history of actively taking part in UN peacekeeping operations. Even delighted is the fact that our Nari Shakti is participating "In a tweet, Modi. He was replying to a tweet sent out by the ministry of defense's supplementary directorate general of public administration.

"The largest group of female peacekeepers from the #IndianArmy is sent to the #UnitedNation mission in #Abyei, #UNISFA. Under the @UN flag, the team will offer relief & support to women & children in one of the highly operational & difficult terrain circumstances "The ministry of defence tweeted.

According to a statement released on Friday by India's Permanent Mission to the UN, a platoon of female peacekeepers will be sent to Abyei as a member of the Indian Battalion in the United Nations Interim Security Force, Abyei (UNISFA).
Indian women have a long history of participating in UN peacekeeping deployments. Before being sent to the Republic of the Congo in 1960, women working in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services were interviewed by UN Radio.

It is pertinent to note that Indian peacekeepers have served in United Nation peacekeeping missions around the world. They safeguard civilians and assist peace processes, and also carry out specialist tasks. In Eritrea, Indian engineers helped to rehabilitate roads as part of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE). 

Moreover, Indian doctors were given medical care to the local population in missions around the world, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
