NEW DELHI: Indian Government's Commitment to Simplify Laws and Promote Vernacular Language Usage Highlighted by PM Modi at International Lawyers' Conference

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the International Lawyers' Conference held in New Delhi on September 23, emphasized his government's earnest efforts to draft laws in a more accessible manner, with a focus on using Indian languages wherever possible.

In his inaugural address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the pivotal role that language plays in shaping the legal framework and ensuring equitable access to justice. He expressed the Indian government's vision to present laws in two distinct drafts: one in the conventional language familiar to legal experts and another in a simplified language that the common citizens of the country can readily comprehend. PM Modi articulated that the objective is for every citizen to perceive the law as something relatable and approachable.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to the historical practice of formulating laws in a convoluted manner, emphasizing the need for a transformative shift towards clarity and accessibility in legal documents.

In a tribute to the legal community, PM Modi commended the judiciary and the Bar for their longstanding commitment to upholding India's justice system, highlighting their significant role in the nation's struggle for independence. He noted that luminaries such as Mahatma Gandhi, B. R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had their roots in the legal profession, underscoring the legal fraternity's enduring contribution to India's development.

Reflecting on the current state of India, the Prime Minister referred to several historic milestones, including the recent passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament, which is anticipated to empower women and infuse fresh vigor into women-centric initiatives. He also lauded achievements like India's participation in the G20 Summit and the successful Chandrayaan mission, illustrating the nation's expanding global footprint.

PM Modi concluded his address by asserting that as India aspires to achieve the status of a developed nation by 2047, the foundation of a robust and impartial justice system is imperative. He emphasized that impartial justice serves as a cornerstone for garnering international trust in India's progress, highlighting its significance in the nation's journey towards becoming a global powerhouse.
