Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized that the friendship between India and Austria is strong and will continue to strengthen in the future. He made this statement during a private meeting with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer ahead of their official discussions on Wednesday. The aim of these talks is to fully explore the potential of the bilateral partnership between the two countries.

PM Modi arrived in Austria on Tuesday evening after visiting Moscow. This visit marks the first time in over 40 years that an Indian prime minister has visited Austria.

Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian community upon his arrival at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Vienna. Austrian artists greeted him with a rendition of the patriotic song "Vande Mataram" to mark the occasion.

The discussions help enhance economic collaboration between India and Austria, focusing on opportunities for business leaders from both nations. Additionally, Modi and Nehammer will explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations and tackle various geopolitical challenges together. This visit emphasizes India’s dedication to fostering strong ties with Austria, promoting mutual growth and development. Chancellor Nehammer warmly welcomed PM Modi, referring to India as a friend and partner. He expressed eagerness to discuss political and economic matters during the visit.

PM Modi responded gratefully, affirming the ongoing collaboration between India and Austria. He shared photos and wrote, “Thank you, Chancellor @karlnehammer, for the warm welcome. I look forward to our discussions tomorrow as well. Our nations will continue working together to further global good.”

This visit is historically significant as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years, with Indira Gandhi being the last in 1983.

Before arriving in Austria, Modi highlighted the shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law that bind the two countries, laying the foundation for a closer partnership.

Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1949, India and Austria have maintained regular exchanges, underscoring the importance of strengthening their relationship. Austria is celebrated for its rich cultural and architectural heritage, with Vienna famed for its orchestral music and legendary composers.

The visits of India’s philosopher-poet and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore to Vienna in 1921 and 1926 were pivotal moments of cultural and intellectual exchange between the two nations.
