New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to freedom fighter and statesman C Rajagopalachari, On the 143rd anniversary of his birth, saying he will be remembered for his contributions to the liberation movement, administrative and intellectual prowess. Modi shared a letter that the country's first home minister, Sardar Patel, had written to him when he took over as the Governor-General of India, noting that Patel was an ardent well-wisher of Rajaji.

On the occasion of Shri C. Rajagopalachari's Jayanti, we pay our respects to him. He is recognised for his administrative and intellectual prowess, as well as his contributions to the independence struggle. On Twitter, the Prime Minister shared a photo of Rajaji taking his oath as Governor-General and the announcement that he had been granted the Bharat Ratna.

Modi went on to say that he was a well-liked statesman. Rajagopalachari was a close acquaintance of Mahatma Gandhi and held numerous government positions before founding the Swatantra Party, which opposed the Congress and championed socialism and statism. The party promoted for a market-based economy, which was far ahead of its time. However, after his death in 1972, the party died away.
